About this quiz
English has three articles: 'a', 'an', and 'the'. But it also has a 'zero article' — meaning no article at all. Knowing which to use is one of the biggest challenges for learners whose native languages don't have articles (including Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and many others).
The basic rules: use 'a/an' when you introduce something for the first time or when it's one of many ('a dog barked'). Use 'the' when both speaker and listener know which specific thing you mean ('the dog barked' — we both know which dog). Use no article (zero article) with plural or uncountable nouns when speaking generally ('dogs are loyal', 'water is essential').
Special cases that trip people up: 'the sun', 'the moon', 'the internet' always take 'the' because there's only one. Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) take no article ('I had breakfast'). Musical instruments take 'the' ('she plays the piano'). Sports take no article ('she plays tennis'). Languages take no article ('she speaks French').
